GIANTS COME FOR ALL OF US
Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man and have him come down to me.” 1 Samuel 17:8
Giants come for all of us.
I wish it wasn’t the case, but at some moment in your life you will face down something that will feel daunting and insurmountable.
In the story of David and Goliath, David has extreme confidence that God will give him the victory. Enough confidence that he volunteers to face down the giant.
Where does David’s confidence come from?
To David, this battle is fundamentally spiritual in nature. Goliath is challenging and defying the living God. This detail mattered to David.
Most of the onlookers saw only a giant. David, however, saw a mortal man defying almighty God. And David knew that he would not be alone when he faced Goliath. God would fight with him!
The truth is, sometimes we make our “giants” taller than they actually are. They seem impossible to overcome; insurmountable.
If you are facing a giant right now, my heart goes out to you. I know what it feels like to be afraid.
But I have also learned that viewing my situation from God’s perspective helps me to put giant problems in perspective.
Your challenges may be immense, but none of them are bigger than your God!
David has seen God act in the past and it gives him confidence in the present.
“But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, 35I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” 1 Samuel 17:34-37
Observing God’s faithfulness in the past gave David the faith he needed to face Goliath. As Christians, we are more courageous when we have seen God act on our behalf in the past.
When you face towering problems, remind yourself how God helped you in the past. Preach to yourself about God’s faithfulness. If you struggle to see how God has helped you in the past, find someone who can testify about God’s goodness in their own life. Ask them to help you to believe.
Christians can walk in more confidence than anyone on the planet.
David was so confident that he faced the fully armed Goliath with just a sling and a stone. He knew the Creator of the universe would fight by his side.
You and I have challenges and seasons that are hard to see our way through. What God did for David, He can do for you.
Can Jesus defeat the giant that you are facing right now? He can and He will.
